Shaun and Matt Mahoney have much more than burgers and pulled pork under their hats. These brothers—and co-owners of local favorite Mahoney’s Bar and Grill in Bellevue—both have wide-ranging experience in the restaurant business and have shared a culinary mindset for most of their lives.

Shaun started his career at the tender age of 13 washing dishes at a supper club in Rochester, Minnesota. Before moving to the Wood River Valley in 1989, he earned his stripes at a variety of restaurants around the country, including a two-year stint at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida where he worked alongside master chef Lawrence McFadden.

Once he got to Idaho, Shaun began managing Louie’s Restaurant and later worked in management at China Pepper in Ketchum. His other jobs in the restaurant industry include serving as the food and beverage manager at Elkhorn Resort in Sun Valley (as well as other endeavors too numerous to mention).

Matt spent the early days of his culinary career at J.D. Hoyt’s famous chop house in Minneapolis and Morton’s Steak House in Portland. After following his brother Shaun to the Wood River Valley in 1991, Matt worked in Ketchum at the Sawtooth Club and China Pepper before bartending at Whiskey Jacques—and then managing that operation for five years.

The Mahoney brothers opened their own restaurant—Mahoney’s Bar and Grill—on Bellevue’s Main Street in September 2006. Famous for their “Juicy Lucy” burgers bursting with melted cheese, Matt and Shaun both have extensive experience in catering events throughout the valley.
